Monkeying Around in Library 2.0

or my adventure into the world of new technologies!

I have found many of the exercises challenging, and I had to make many errors before I got some of it right.

Yet, as James Joyce said, "Mistakes are the portals to discovery."

I was willing to "try" new things, and I got an education about these online applications and html features.

The sites I will use most are Library Thing, del.icio.us and Google Docs. My favorite "thing" was Palooza Head.

I feel that I am now in touch with my inner NERDETTE!

I have not used the downloadable eAudiobooks myself, but I do help patrons, and I have attended several presentations on digital books.

If I had an MP3 Player, I would use it a lot since I love to listen to books. I do not think that I would swim with it though!

Our Supervisor went over the process very well on her blog; to her instructions I would add the following:

1) It is important that the patron register their new software. If they don't, the software won't work.

2) Looking at the individual record of the item in the catalog is both interesting and helpful. The record tells whether the "book" can be burned to a CD, how many hours it runs, how many copies are available, etc.

3) The audiobook can be put on hold just like a regular book and the patron will be notified.

I discussed these "things" earlier. You might remeber Monty Python's "Gorilla Librarian" post. Podcasts and YouTube are some of the best things about Web 2.0! I think the webcasts that I use for my coursework in school for the MLIS program at SJSU are exciting. I can actually watch a lecture without being in the physical classroom.

I liked Zoho Writer when I tried it. How very simple and easy to use this great file sharing site.
I tend to be a Google fan though, and I use Google Documents for my internship work file sharing. It is an alternative to carrying around a thumb drive since I work on different computers. I find it helpful too because occassionally I run into problems downloading files from my Mac to a Windows operating sysem.
File sharing is a great solution for group work too.

P.S. We have a wetpaint wiki at the reference desk. The staff shares information about student assignments, readers advisory book lists, local events, facilty issues or problems, and library programs. I check this wiki when I get into work. It is a great way to keep up to the minute with our branch information and better serve the patrons while at the reference desk.

I like the etomology of Wiki from the Hawaiian word wiki-wiki for "QUICK" .

Wikis are especially good for sharing information because they are communal websites. They seem remarkably suited for special interest communities who want to share information, as oppossed to "social sites" where meeting and keeping tabs on friends seems to be the main purpose.

I think I am a 'wiki-type' and I beleive I will use wikis in the future.

Search: Technorati & Learning 2.0 Thoughts

One Blogger calls 2.0 YOGA for the MIND. I agree. Both yoga and Learning 2.0 are MIND EXPANDING activities. The use of these new technologies requires learning new skills, and "trying things out" stimulates lots of neurons and tiny atomic processes that keep one from becomming rigid or complacent.

2.0 can be a challenging experience that, while humbling, does give satisfaction and a sense of mastery when the Ah-Ah moment comes and you 'get' what's what.

OK...I have perused the Technocrati site and I see that it is a ....dynamic and always-updating portion of the Web that can search, surface, and organize blogs and the other forms of independent, user-generated content (photos, videos, voting, etc.) increasingly referred to as “citizen media.”
This seems very a lively site...and I did do a search for Library 2.0. This was good, because I ran into some widgets that I like.

I did not CLAIM my blog or do a watch list, because I am not so into the "social" aspect of 2.0.
In fact, I had a myspace account at one point, but I cancelled it. If someone Googles my name, I'm not sure I want the very personal "social" stuff with my family and friends to appear on the search results. Just a personal preference.

I love NPR and listen to the Friday morning movie reviews on AirTalk with Larry Mantle on KPPC (98.3fm) by podcast.

I have itunes so I looked at the choices from the itunes podcast directory, and listened to a show called Mr. Manners, and listened to the ubiquitous, but never inane, Rick Steve's travel show.

I was delighted to learn about Really Simple Syndication" or "Rich Site Summary." Much of the useful information I get about my profession is from specific websites. Now I can just get it all from my page at Bloglines.

I ENJOY spelling with Flickr...I like mash-ups (I notice the term is now part of mainstream language used to describe a creative inspiration or flash).

I am not a social-networker...I like to have some privacy, and I especially did not like the "new friends" on My-Space who sent me odd or leering messages. I cancelled my account after googling my name, and finding myself on My-Space. It seemed somewhat unprofessional!?

I like Blogs, because they seem more private and you can invite (allow) certain members only.

Changing Stereotypes with Library 2.0

Mistakenly stereotyped as "wimpy," the Library Poodle is proud, elegant, dignified, good-natured and industrius. These workers are highly intelligent and one of the most trainable breeds. They are pleasant, happy, sensitive and easily adapt to change.

The Library Poodle tends to be a bit calmer than other varieties since they are bred to deal with many challenging problems.

For the most part Library Poodles are friendly toward strangers, and are excellent with children. They are playful, curious and, of course, outstanding hunters and retrievers of information!
